Tea Tree Essential Oil

Melaleuca alternifolia — Steam Distilled — Australia

For over forty thousand years, the Aboriginal peoples of Australia's eastern coast used the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia as one of their most trusted and versatile healing plants — crushing them and inhaling the vapour for respiratory conditions, applying them as poultices to wounds and skin infections, and steeping them in water for medicinal preparations. The knowledge of this plant accumulated across a period of time so vast it dwarfs the entire recorded history of European civilisation.

Western science encountered that knowledge in the 1920s when Australian researcher Arthur Penfold published the first scientific analysis of tea tree oil and found its antimicrobial properties to be significantly more powerful than the carbolic acid then used as a standard antiseptic. The results were remarkable enough to bring tea tree oil into Australian military first aid kits during World War Two — issued to soldiers and sailors for wound care and skin conditions in field conditions where pharmaceutical alternatives were unavailable.

What followed was one of the most extensively researched careers of any essential oil in scientific literature. Tea tree is now among the most studied, most validated, and most widely trusted essential oils in the world — its antimicrobial, antifungal, and skin-supportive properties documented across hundreds of peer-reviewed studies. It is the oil that most convincingly bridges traditional botanical knowledge and modern evidence-based practice.

Recommended uses:

Skincare — spot treatment: Apply 1 drop diluted in a small amount of carrier oil directly to blemishes as a targeted, twice-daily treatment. One of the most extensively studied and well-documented natural approaches to blemish-prone skin — the research comparing tea tree gel to benzoyl peroxide for acne is among the most cited in natural skincare science, showing comparable efficacy with significantly reduced side effects. A genuine staple for oily, blemish-prone, or congested skin.

Hair and scalp: Add 3-5 drops to your regular shampoo for a deeply clarifying, antimicrobial scalp treatment that addresses dandruff, excess oil, scalp congestion, and the itchiness that accompanies an unhealthy scalp environment. One of the most well-supported and widely used natural approaches to scalp health — consistent use produces measurable improvements in scalp condition for most people.

Aromatherapy and home purification: Diffuse 5-7 drops for a powerfully clean, purifying atmosphere that is one of the most effective natural approaches to air quality and home hygiene available. Particularly valuable during cold and flu season, in spaces shared by people who are unwell, or any environment where air quality and cleanliness matter.

Home cleaning: Add 15-20 drops to natural cleaning solutions for a genuinely antimicrobial boost to surface sprays, bathroom cleaners, and mould-prevention formulas. Tea tree in cleaning applications is one of the most evidence-supported uses of any essential oil — the research on its effectiveness against common household pathogens and fungi is extensive and consistent.

Massage: Blend 3-5 drops in a carrier oil for a refreshing, clarifying massage blend. Particularly effective for foot massage targeting nail and skin health, or for scalp massage as part of a dedicated hair care treatment.

Scent profile: Distinctive, fresh, and unmistakably medicinal — a sharp, clean camphoraceous quality with woody undertones and a slightly earthy depth that is immediately recognisable and universally associated with cleanliness and natural healthcare. A top to middle note that fills a space with brisk, clinical freshness and a quality that communicates purity and efficacy before a single conscious thought has formed.

Blending: Tea tree pairs beautifully with lavender — one of the most classic and complementary essential oil pairings, with the lavender softening tea tree's medicinal sharpness and the tea tree adding purposeful depth to lavender's floral calm. Also exceptional with lemon, eucalyptus, and peppermint for powerfully fresh cleaning and purifying blends, with clary sage and rosemary for clarifying skincare formulations, and with frankincense for blends that balance antimicrobial efficacy with deeper aromatic complexity.

Safety: For external use only. Always dilute before applying to skin and perform a patch test before first use — tea tree can cause sensitisation with repeated undiluted application and should always be used diluted for regular skincare use. Maximum 1-2% for facial application, up to 3% for body use. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children and never allow children or pets to ingest — tea tree is toxic when swallowed. Not recommended during pregnancy. Note that tea tree oxidises over time — store in a cool, dark location and replace after 12-18 months as oxidised tea tree oil is significantly more likely to cause skin sensitisation.
