Bergamot Essential Oil

Citrus bergamia — Cold Pressed — Calabria, Italy

Calabria — the sun-drenched toe of Italy's boot — produces bergamot of a quality found nowhere else on earth. The combination of volcanic soil, Mediterranean climate, and generations of cultivation knowledge creates a fruit whose essential oil is so distinctive and complex that it became the defining note of Earl Grey tea, the backbone of some of the world's most celebrated perfumes, and one of the most beloved and versatile oils in aromatherapy.

Cold pressed from the peel of fruit harvested while still green — before the volatile aromatic compounds begin to shift with full ripening — Calabrian bergamot has a brightness and depth that sets it apart from any other citrus oil. It uplifts without overstimulating, calms without sedating, and brings a floral complexity to everything it touches that makes it genuinely irreplaceable in a collection.

Recommended uses:

Skincare: Dilute at 0.5-1% in a carrier oil or add to an unscented toner for oily, congested, or uneven skin. Bergamot's naturally balancing properties make it one of the most effective citrus oils for skin that needs clarifying without stripping. Avoid applying to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight — see safety note below.

Aromatherapy: Diffuse 5-7 drops to create an atmosphere that is simultaneously uplifting and calming — one of the few oils that genuinely does both. Particularly effective for anxiety, low mood, and the kind of restless mental energy that makes it hard to settle. Also beautiful added to candles or room sprays for a naturally sophisticated fragrance.

Haircare: Add 3-5 drops to your regular shampoo or conditioner for enhanced shine, manageability, and a naturally beautiful scent that lingers without synthetic fragrance. Particularly beneficial for oily scalps that need balancing.

Natural freshener: Add 10-15 drops to a small spray bottle of water for a non-toxic room and linen spray that freshens any space with genuine Italian citrus elegance.

Scent profile: Bright and citrusy with a fruity sweetness and distinctive warm, spicy floral undertones that set it apart from any other citrus oil — closer to neroli than lemon or orange, with a complexity that makes it as at home in perfumery as in aromatherapy. A top to middle note that opens sparkling and fresh before settling into something warmer and more nuanced.

Blending: Bergamot is one of the great bridging oils — it connects and harmonises almost everything it touches. Particularly beautiful with clary sage, cypress, frankincense, geranium, jasmine, orange, rosemary, sandalwood, vetiver, and ylang ylang. Use it to add sophistication and brightness to floral blends, or to soften and lift heavier resinous combinations.

Safety: For external use only. Always dilute before applying to skin — recommended maximum 0.5-1% for facial application. Perform a patch test before first use. Bergamot is photosensitive — avoid applying to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or UV light for at least 12 hours after topical use, as it can cause skin darkening or irritation. This does not apply to bergamot FCF (furocoumarin-free) versions. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy.
