Oregano Essential Oil
Origanum vulgare L. — Steam Distilled — Spain
Origanon — joy of the mountains. The ancient Greeks named it for the way it grows wild across Mediterranean hillsides, filling the mountain air with its bold, unmistakable aroma. Hippocrates prescribed it. Ancient Egyptians used it in preservation and medicine. And across every Mediterranean culture that encountered it — Greek, Roman, Arab, Spanish — oregano was understood not merely as a kitchen herb but as one of nature's most potently useful plants.
The essential oil distilled from the leaves and stems of Spanish Origanum vulgare carries that history in concentrated form. This is not the gentle, approachable herb of the spice rack — oregano essential oil is bold, assertive, and extraordinarily potent, containing high concentrations of carvacrol and thymol that make it one of the most powerful aromatic oils available and one that commands genuine respect in handling and dilution.
Spain produces some of the finest oregano essential oil in the world — the combination of Mediterranean climate, mineral-rich soil, and the particular terroir of the Spanish highlands yielding an oil with exceptional aromatic depth and potency.
Recommended uses:
Aromatherapy: Diffuse 1-2 drops maximum — oregano is exceptionally potent and requires far less than most oils to fill a space. Blended with lavender and rosemary it creates a warm, grounding, herbal atmosphere that is deeply calming and conducive to relaxation. Use it as a supporting note in blends rather than a primary diffusion oil.
Skincare: Dilute carefully at 0.5-1% maximum in a carrier oil for a clarifying, purifying skin treatment targeted at blemished or congested areas. The naturally potent aromatic compounds make this one of the most assertive skin-clarifying oils in the collection — use it precisely and sparingly as a targeted treatment rather than a general moisturiser.
Hair and scalp: Add 1-2 drops to a carrier oil for a deeply clarifying, invigorating scalp treatment that addresses buildup, supports circulation, and brings the oregano's naturally purifying properties directly to the scalp. Massage in and leave for 10-15 minutes before shampooing. Particularly beneficial for oily or congested scalps that need a genuine reset.
Home cleaning: Blend with lemon essential oil and water or natural cleaning agents for a powerfully aromatic, naturally purifying surface cleaner. One of the most effective essential oils for DIY antimicrobial cleaning formulations — the high carvacrol content makes it a genuinely potent addition to any natural cleaning routine.
Massage: Blend 1-2 drops maximum in a carrier oil for a warming, invigorating massage blend that addresses sore, fatigued muscles. The warming quality of oregano penetrates deeply — combine with rosemary and black pepper for one of the most effective natural warming massage formulas in the collection. Always dilute properly and avoid sensitive skin areas entirely.
Scent profile: Bold, spicy, and intensely herbal — warm, dry, and earthy with woody undertones and the characteristic Mediterranean robustness that makes oregano immediately recognisable even in trace amounts. A strong middle note that dominates any blend it enters — used deliberately and sparingly it adds depth, warmth, and a medicinal herbal authority that few other oils provide.
Blending: Oregano blends beautifully with marjoram and rosemary for deeply herbal Mediterranean combinations, with cypress and cedarwood for grounded, woodsy formulas, and with lavender for blends that balance its assertive potency with gentle floral calm. Also works well with lemon and tea tree in cleaning and purifying formulas. Always add oregano last and in the smallest proportion — it is one of the most dominant oils in any blend and requires a measured hand.
Safety: For external use only. Oregano is one of the most potent dermal sensitisers and irritants in the essential oil world — must be diluted with great care at all times. Maximum 0.5-1% for skin application. Never apply undiluted — oregano oil applied neat to skin can cause serious chemical burns and lasting sensitisation. Always perform a patch test before first use. Avoid entirely on sensitive, damaged, or inflamed skin. Avoid contact with eyes and all mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Not recommended during pregnancy. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you have sensitive skin, known herb allergies, or are taking blood-thinning or anticoagulant medications.
