Neroli Essential Oil

Citrus aurantium amara — Steam Distilled — Brazil

In 1680, Anna Maria de la Trémoille — Princess of Nerola, a small Italian principality near Rome — discovered the exquisite scent of bitter orange blossom and began wearing it as a personal fragrance on her gloves and in her bath. The European aristocracy immediately followed. The oil has carried her name ever since.

But neroli's story begins long before a 17th century Italian princess gave it its name. Bitter orange blossom has been used in perfumery, medicine, and ceremony across the Arab world, North Africa, and the Mediterranean for centuries — woven into wedding traditions, bridal preparations, and religious ritual for its association with purity, joy, and the opening of the heart. In traditional Arab medicine it was prescribed for anxiety and heart palpitations. In North African cultures orange blossom water — a byproduct of neroli distillation — remains one of the most beloved and widely used aromatic waters in existence.

It takes approximately one thousand kilograms of hand-harvested bitter orange blossoms to produce a single kilogram of neroli essential oil — making it one of the most precious and labour-intensive oils in the aromatic world, and one whose extraordinary complexity and depth fully justify that effort.

Recommended uses:

Skincare: One of the most celebrated essential oils in natural skincare for its skin-renewing, pore-refining, and complexion-supporting properties. Add 2-3 drops to a carrier oil, unscented serum, or moisturiser for a deeply nourishing facial treatment suitable for virtually all skin types — particularly valuable for dry, sensitive, or mature skin that needs serious botanical nourishment. Dilute at 1-2% for facial application. The combination of neroli with rosehip or jojoba oil produces one of the most luxurious natural facial serums possible.

Aromatherapy: Diffuse 4-6 drops for a deeply calming, emotionally uplifting atmosphere with a sophisticated floral-citrus quality unlike anything else in the collection. Neroli is one of the most effective oils in aromatherapy for anxiety and the particular emotional restlessness that settles into the chest and refuses to shift — its calming properties are both immediate and lasting.

Natural perfumery: An essential ingredient in classical perfumery — neroli forms the heart of countless iconic fragrances and is one of the three oils, alongside petitgrain and bitter orange, that make up the complete aromatic picture of the bitter orange tree. Apply diluted to pulse points as a natural perfume of extraordinary elegance and complexity.

Massage: Blend 3-5 drops in a carrier oil for a deeply calming, skin-nourishing massage that addresses emotional anxiety as readily as physical tension. The floral-citrus warmth of neroli makes it one of the most beautiful and sophisticated massage oil additions in the collection — luxurious to give and extraordinary to receive.

Bath: Add 6-8 drops to a warm bath dispersed in a carrier oil for an indulgent, emotionally restorative soak. The combination of neroli, frankincense, and rose in a bath oil is one of the most luxurious aromatic experiences the collection can produce — deeply calming, skin-nourishing, and genuinely special.

Scent profile: Sweet, floral, and warmly citrusy with a honeyed depth, a subtle green quality from the fresh blossom, and a complexity that deepens and evolves beautifully on the skin and in the diffuser. A heart note of exceptional elegance — simultaneously fresh and warm, simple and complex, familiar and utterly unlike anything else. The scent that perfumers reach for when they want something that is unambiguously beautiful.

Blending: Neroli is one of the great floral heart notes of natural perfumery — it elevates and refines everything it touches. Pairs beautifully with lavender, lemon, clary sage, myrrh, rose, jasmine, frankincense, sandalwood, and warm spice oils including nutmeg, cinnamon bark, and clove. Use it to add floral elegance and emotional warmth to citrus blends, or to brighten and lift heavier resinous and spiced combinations into something more refined and luminous.

Safety: For external use only. Always dilute before applying to skin and perform a patch test before first use. Generally considered one of the gentler and better-tolerated floral essential oils — suitable for most skin types including sensitive skin when properly diluted. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy. Note that neroli is a genuinely precious oil — use it thoughtfully and sparingly to honour both its quality and its cost.
