Grapefruit Essential Oil

Citrus paradisi — Cold Pressed — USA/Mexico

There is a particular quality to grapefruit that no other citrus oil quite replicates — brighter than orange, less sharp than lemon, with a juicy, slightly bitter-sweet complexity that feels simultaneously like sunshine and fresh air and the best possible version of a morning that hasn't gone wrong yet. Cold pressed from the outer peel at the moment of peak ripeness, this oil captures that quality in its most vivid and immediate form.

Grapefruit is the youngest of the major citrus fruits in historical terms — a natural hybrid of pomelo and sweet orange that appeared in the Caribbean in the 18th century and spread quickly through the warm-climate growing regions of the Americas. What it lacks in ancient history it more than compensates for in sheer aromatic vitality. Few oils arrive in a room the way grapefruit does — immediate, optimistic, and completely impossible to feel flat in the presence of.

Recommended uses:

Aromatherapy: Diffuse 6-8 drops alone or in citrus blends for an instantly uplifting, energising atmosphere that is one of the most effective natural mood-lifters in the collection. Particularly valuable in the morning, during creative work sessions, or any time energy and motivation need a genuine aromatic boost. Also one of the best oils for neutralising stale or heavy odours in a space.

Skincare: Add 2-3 drops to a carrier oil, unscented toner, or moisturiser for a naturally clarifying, toning, and brightening skin treatment. Particularly well suited to oily or combination skin that needs balancing and brightening. Dilute at 1-2% for facial application and — critically — avoid applying to skin that will be exposed to sunlight. See safety note below.

Haircare: Add 3-5 drops to your regular shampoo for a scalp-clarifying, shine-enhancing treatment that removes buildup and leaves hair feeling genuinely fresh and alive. Also beautiful as a few drops added to a carrier oil for a pre-shampoo scalp massage.

Bath: Add 6-8 drops to a warm bath dispersed in a carrier oil for a refreshing, uplifting soak that is the aromatic equivalent of starting the day over — particularly effective as a morning bath or whenever you need to reset your energy mid-day.

DIY scrubs and exfoliants: A natural partner for sugar and salt scrubs — add 8-10 drops to a simple coconut oil and sugar base for a brightening body scrub with a genuinely beautiful natural fragrance and the clarifying properties of grapefruit working directly on skin during exfoliation.

Scent profile: Bright, sweet, and unmistakably citrus with a juicy, slightly bitter-sweet complexity and a fresh, sparkling quality that is immediately uplifting. A top note that opens the senses instantly — clean, vivid, and radiantly optimistic in character. Softer and sweeter than lemon, more complex and less sugary than orange.

Blending: Grapefruit pairs beautifully with other citrus oils — lemon, orange, lime, and bergamot — and brings a bright, sparkling lift to herbaceous oils like rosemary, lavender, and basil. Also exceptional with peppermint for invigorating, clarifying blends, and with frankincense or cedarwood when a citrus top note is needed over a grounded resinous base. Use it freely — it harmonises with almost everything.

Safety: For external use only. Always dilute before applying to skin and perform a patch test before first use. Grapefruit is photosensitive — avoid applying to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or UV light for at least 12 hours after topical application, as it can cause skin darkening or irritation. This photosensitivity is present but generally considered less intense than bergamot. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy or if taking medications — grapefruit can interact with certain pharmaceutical drugs.
