Geranium Essential Oil
Pelargonium graveolens — Steam Distilled — Egypt
Egyptian geranium is considered among the finest in the world — the combination of the Nile Delta's rich soil, consistent sunshine, and generations of cultivation knowledge producing an oil with a floral depth and complexity that geranium from other origins rarely matches. It is one of the great workhorses of natural perfumery and aromatherapy — beautiful enough to anchor a fragrance, versatile enough to belong in almost every blend, and useful enough to earn permanent residency in any serious essential oil collection.
Geranium has been used in European herbal and beauty traditions since the 17th century, when it arrived from South Africa and was immediately adopted into skincare and perfumery. Its remarkable ability to balance — sebum production in the skin, hormonal fluctuation in the body, contrasting notes in a blend — has made it one of the most consistently recommended oils across every application of aromatherapy.
Recommended uses:
Skincare: One of the most universally beneficial essential oils for skin of all types. Dilute 2-3 drops in a carrier oil or add to an unscented moisturiser or toner for a naturally balancing, toning, and complexion-supporting facial treatment. Particularly well suited to combination skin that fluctuates between oily and dry, and to mature skin that needs gentle stimulation and toning. Dilute at 1-2% for facial application.
Bath: Add 6-8 drops to a warm bath — dispersed first in a carrier oil or full-fat milk — for a deeply floral, emotionally balancing soak. Blend with lavender and a handful of sea salt for one of the most restorative bath combinations in the collection — the geranium addresses emotional fluctuation while the lavender calms the nervous system and the salt replenishes minerals.
Haircare: Add 3-5 drops to your regular conditioner or a carrier oil hair treatment for satin-smooth, glossy hair with a naturally beautiful floral scent. Particularly beneficial for dry or damaged hair that needs nourishment and shine without heaviness.
Aromatherapy: Diffuse 5-7 drops for an uplifting, emotionally balancing atmosphere with a soft, sophisticated floral quality. Particularly effective during periods of hormonal fluctuation, emotional instability, or any time the mood needs gentle lifting and rebalancing rather than sedating or stimulating.
Scent profile: A rich, rosy-floral aroma with softly sweet and herbaceous green undertones — closer to rose than any other oil yet distinctly its own, with a freshness and complexity that makes it equally at home in skincare formulations and fine natural perfumery. A middle note with excellent tenacity that bridges floral and herbal families seamlessly.
Blending: Geranium is one of the most versatile middle notes in aromatherapy — it harmonises, softens, and connects almost everything it touches. Particularly beautiful with lavender, bergamot, clary sage, jasmine, and cedarwood. Also exceptional with rose, neroli, frankincense, and ylang ylang for deeply luxurious floral blends. Use it to add rosy floral depth to citrus combinations, or to soften and feminise woody and resinous blends.
Safety: For external use only. Always dilute before applying to skin and perform a patch test before first use. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Generally well tolerated by most skin types when properly diluted — one of the gentler floral oils. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy. Those with known sensitivity to plants in the Geraniaceae family should exercise caution.
