Fennel Essential Oil

Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce — Steam Distilled — Hungary

Fennel has been a fixture in human medicine and kitchen gardens for so long that its cultivation predates written history. Ancient Egyptians used it as both food and medicine. Greek athletes ate it believing it conveyed strength and longevity. Roman soldiers carried fennel seeds on long campaigns. Medieval European herbalists considered it one of the nine sacred herbs. And in kitchens and apothecaries across the Mediterranean world, it has been continuously valued for thousands of years for its warm, digestive, and gently clarifying properties.

Sweet fennel — Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce — is the gentler, more rounded of the fennel varieties, its oil carrying all the warmth and anise-like sweetness of the plant without the sharper, more medicinal edge of bitter fennel. Distilled from the seeds harvested in Hungary's fertile growing regions, this is fennel at its most approachable and versatile.

Recommended uses:

Digestive support massage: Blend 3-5 drops in a carrier oil and massage gently in slow, clockwise circular motions over the abdomen — the direction of natural digestive flow. One of the most traditionally used and well-established applications for fennel oil across multiple herbal traditions. Deeply warming and comforting for digestive discomfort and bloating.

Aromatherapy: Diffuse 4-6 drops to create a warm, gently sweet atmosphere with a subtly herbal quality that is calming without being heavy. Particularly pleasant in kitchen and dining spaces where the anise-sweet aroma feels completely at home.

Skincare: Add 1-2 drops to a carrier oil or unscented toner for its naturally toning and clarifying properties. Particularly suited to mature or dull skin that needs gentle stimulation and brightening. Dilute at 1-2% for facial application.

DIY candles and soaps: A beautiful and somewhat unexpected addition to handmade candles and cold-process soaps — the warm, anise-sweet scent performs well in heat and adds a distinctive, sophisticated herbal note that sets handmade products apart from typical floral or citrus formulations.

Natural perfumery: A distinctive middle to base note in natural fragrance compositions. Adds an unusual, gently anise-sweet herbal warmth that bridges spice and floral families in ways that few other oils can. Particularly beautiful in oriental and herbal fragrance compositions.

Scent profile: Sweet, warm, and distinctly anise-like with a gentle herbal earthiness and a soft, slightly honeyed depth that makes it more rounded and approachable than star anise or anise seed oil. A middle note with good staying power that warms and deepens as it settles on the skin or diffuses into a room.

Blending: Fennel pairs beautifully with bergamot, lavender, frankincense, and rose. Also works wonderfully with geranium, basil, lemon, and sandalwood. Use it to add a warm, herbal sweetness to floral blends, or as an unexpected bridge note in oriental and spiced compositions that need something to soften the transition between citrus top notes and resinous base notes.

Safety: For external use only. Always dilute before applying to skin and perform a patch test before first use. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Not recommended for use on children under five years of age. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you have epilepsy, oestrogen-dependent conditions, or are taking hormonal medications — fennel contains trans-anethole which has mild oestrogen-like properties.
