Clove Essential Oil
Syzygium aromaticum — Steam Distilled — Indonesia
The Spice Islands of Indonesia — the Maluku archipelago — were once the only place on earth where cloves grew, and for centuries that geographical accident made them the most strategically valuable islands in the world. Portuguese, Dutch, and British empires competed violently for control of the clove trade. The spice was worth its weight in gold in medieval European markets. Wars were fought. Colonies established. The entire shape of global history shifted, in part, because of the extraordinary aromatic power of the dried flower buds of this single tree.
That power is fully present in the essential oil. Clove is one of the most potent and assertive oils in the collection — bold, warm, and completely unmistakable. Used with respect and proper dilution, it is also one of the most useful and historically significant aromatics available.
Recommended uses:
Aromatherapy: Diffuse 3-4 drops — used sparingly as it is highly potent — to create a warm, spiced, invigorating atmosphere that promotes focus and mental clarity. Particularly effective in blends with citrus oils that balance its intensity with brightness. One of the defining notes of winter and festive aromatic blends.
Skincare: Add 1 drop maximum to a carrier oil or unscented moisturiser for clarifying, purifying skin support. Suitable for oily or congested skin that benefits from its naturally antimicrobial aromatic properties. Dilute carefully at no more than 0.5% for facial application — this is one of the most potent dermal sensitisers in the essential oil world and requires serious respect.
Perfumery: A classic base and heart note in oriental and spiced fragrance compositions. Blend with vanilla, benzoin, cedarwood, or frankincense for rich, exotic aromatic depth. A little goes an extraordinarily long way — start with a single drop and build from there.
DIY cleaning products: Add 10-15 drops to natural cleaning formulations for a powerfully aromatic and purifying addition to homemade surface sprays, floor cleaners, or diffuser blends designed for home cleansing and freshening.
Scent profile: Warm, bold, and intensely spiced with woody, slightly sweet undertones and a penetrating quality that fills a room with a single drop. A middle to base note that dominates any blend it enters — use deliberately and sparingly for depth and warmth rather than as a primary note.
Blending: Clove is a powerful accent oil that transforms blends with even small additions. Pairs beautifully with cinnamon bark, peppermint, ginger, lemon, and grapefruit. Also exceptional with frankincense, orange, vanilla, and cedarwood for rich winter and festive blends. Always add clove last and in the smallest proportion — it is easier to add more than to correct an over-spiced blend.
Safety: For external use only. Clove is one of the most potent dermal sensitisers in aromatherapy and must be diluted with great care — maximum 0.5% for skin application, and avoid entirely on sensitive, damaged, or inflamed skin. Always perform a patch test before first use. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and all sensitive areas. Keep out of reach of children. Not recommended during pregnancy. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you have sensitive skin, clove allergy, or are taking blood-thinning medications.
