German Chamomile Essential Oil
Matricaria chamomilla L. — Steam Distilled — Germany
The deep blue colour is the first thing you notice — and it tells you immediately that this is something genuinely special. That striking blue-green hue comes from chamazulene, a compound that forms during the steam distillation process and is found in significant concentration only in German chamomile. It is the same compound responsible for the oil's remarkable skin-soothing reputation, and it is the reason that German chamomile commands a different level of respect in natural skincare formulation than any other chamomile variety.
Harvested from the top-heavy flowers of Matricaria chamomilla at peak bloom between May and August, this oil has been used by healers, physicians, and herbalists across ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and European traditions for thousands of years. It is one of the oldest and most continuously used medicinal plants in human history — and one of the few whose reputation has only grown stronger as our understanding of it deepens.
Recommended uses:
Skincare: One of the most effective essential oils for sensitive, reactive, or inflamed skin. Add 2-3 drops to a carrier oil, unscented moisturiser, or facial serum and apply to areas of irritation, redness, or sensitivity. Dilute at 1-2% for facial use. Particularly well suited to eczema-prone, rosacea-affected, or post-procedure skin that needs gentle, serious botanical support.
Bath: Add 5-8 drops to a warm bath — combine with a carrier oil or full-fat milk first to disperse evenly — for a deeply calming, skin-soothing soak that addresses both physical tension and emotional restlessness simultaneously.
Aromatherapy: Diffuse 4-6 drops in the evening to create a genuinely calming atmosphere. Particularly effective in children's rooms at bedtime, or for adults who carry anxiety as physical tension in the body. The sweet, apple-like aroma is gentle enough for even the most scent-sensitive individuals.
Massage: Blend 3-5 drops in a carrier oil for a deeply relaxing massage that addresses inflamed or sensitive skin alongside muscular tension. One of the best oils for evening massage routines focused on complete physical and nervous system release.
DIY skincare: A foundational ingredient in natural skincare formulation for sensitive skin — add to homemade serums, balms, creams, and toners wherever skin needs serious calming and anti-inflammatory botanical support.
Scent profile: Sweet and apple-like with hints of warm straw and a subtle herbal earthiness — softer and more comforting than Roman chamomile, with a warmth that makes it feel genuinely medicinal rather than purely floral. A middle note that blends seamlessly without overpowering.
Blending: German chamomile pairs beautifully with bergamot, lavender, geranium, jasmine, and tea tree. Its sweet, apple-like quality softens sharper oils and adds a gentle, skin-focused depth to blends designed for sensitive skin care, relaxation, and nervous system support. Use sparingly — it is potent and its distinctive colour will tint light-coloured formulations blue-green.
Safety: For external use only. Always dilute before applying to skin — recommended 1-2% for facial and sensitive skin application. Perform a patch test before first use, particularly if you have known sensitivities to plants in the Asteraceae family such as ragweed or daisies. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy or if taking blood-thinning medications.
