Frankincense Essential Oil

Boswellia serrata — Steam Distilled — India

There is no oil in the collection with a longer or more significant human story than frankincense. For over five thousand years it has been burned in temples, carried along ancient trade routes, offered in sacred ceremony, prescribed by physicians, and used by healers across Egyptian, Ayurvedic, Chinese, Greek, Roman, Islamic, and Christian traditions without interruption. It was valued more highly than gold in ancient markets. It built trade empires. It scented the air of every major religious tradition the ancient world produced.

That unbroken thread of human reverence across five millennia and every major civilisation is not coincidence. It is accumulated wisdom — the recognition, passed from generation to generation across every culture that encountered this resin, that frankincense does something genuinely remarkable for the mind, the spirit, and the skin.

Boswellia serrata from India is one of the most respected and studied of the frankincense species — its oil rich in boswellic acid-related compounds and alpha-pinene, producing a warm, slightly citrusy, deeply resinous aroma with the grounding, meditative quality that has made this oil sacred across cultures and centuries.

Recommended uses:

Aromatherapy and meditation: Diffuse 3-5 drops to create an atmosphere of genuine stillness and depth. Frankincense slows the breath, quiets mental chatter, and creates the particular quality of inner space that meditation requires — more reliably and more profoundly than almost any other oil. One of the most important and irreplaceable oils for any serious contemplative practice.

Bath: Add 5-7 drops to a warm bath — dispersed first in a carrier oil or full-fat milk — for a deeply grounding, skin-nourishing soak that addresses both physical tension and the kind of existential tiredness that accumulates over demanding weeks.

Skincare: Blend 1-2 drops in a carrier oil or add to an unscented facial serum for one of the most traditionally respected skin-supportive essential oils available. Frankincense has centuries of use in skin care for its toning, restorative, and complexion-supporting properties — particularly valued for mature skin that needs serious botanical nourishment. Dilute at 1-2% for facial application.

Home freshener: Add 10-15 drops to a spray bottle of water for a room and linen spray that brings a sacred, grounding quality to any space — particularly beautiful in bedrooms, meditation spaces, or any room where you want the atmosphere to feel intentional and calm.

DIY cleaning: Blend with lemon essential oil and natural cleaning agents for an aromatically sophisticated, naturally purifying home cleaning formula that smells like a temple rather than a cleaning product.

Scent profile: Warm, woody, and resinous with a subtle citrusy brightness — particularly present in the Boswellia serrata variety — alongside a deep, slightly earthy, balsamic base that grounds and anchors everything. A true base note that evolves slowly and beautifully, becoming richer and more complex the longer it diffuses or sits on the skin. The scent of five thousand years of human ceremony, distilled.

Blending: Frankincense is one of the great harmonising base notes — it deepens, grounds, and extends the life of almost any blend it enters. Particularly beautiful with bergamot, lavender, cedarwood, sandalwood, myrrh, and vanilla. Also exceptional with rose, neroli, clary sage, and ylang ylang for deeply luxurious skin and emotional support blends. Use it as the anchor in any formula that needs gravitas and staying power.

Safety: For external use only. Always dilute before applying to skin and perform a patch test before first use. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Generally considered one of the gentler and better-tolerated essential oils — suitable for most skin types when properly diluted. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy or if taking blood-thinning medications.
